Flights to The Azores Islands

The Azores are located in the Atlantic ocean - sort of middle of nowhere-y. Think of their location as the Azores are to Europe as Bermuda is to the US. Make sense? If you want to get technical, the Azores are about 1000 miles (1600 km) off the coast of Portugal.

The Azores are an archipelago, meaning that there’s lots of islands to explore. In particular, there are 9 main islands. The easiest way to see and explore any of the islands is to rent a car. Getting from island to island will require a flight or a ferry ride, with flights between the islands starting around $62 and keeping you in the air for as little as 10 minutes when flying between São Miguel (PDL) and Santa Maria (SMA).

The Azores are famous for a number of things including hiking, dolphin and whale watching, the beaches, and diving. Being volcanic (active but dormant), the islands are naturally hilly and therefore have some great hikes to explore with views for daysss. Beyond the land of the islands, the waters hold many of the Azores attractions. Sperm whales, common dolphins, and bottlenose dolphins live nearby year-round, while other species like blue whales, migrate through. Tour boats have set etiquettes to limit disturbances on the creatures too.

The Azores aren’t just a fantastic place to visit, they are also an incredible place for extended stays and even for living in. The cost of living is low and the weather is beautiful the majority of the year. The islands are safe and isolated. The Azores are a part of Portugal. That means that, like the rest of Europe, the currency on the islands is the euro. As part of Portugal, the main language of the islands is Portuguese and it can definitely be helpful (especially in smaller towns) to know some common phrases in Portuguese. Azorean Portuguese is super similar to what’s spoken in mainland Europe - with the exception of the island of Sao Miguel where the accent is truly unique. That being said, English is widely spoken across the islands, so with some key phrases, a translator app on your phone, and some patience you should have zero issues enjoying your time in the Azores!
