Student flights from the US to Fiji

Fiji is an absolutely stunning island archipelago in the South Pacific and just about a four-hour flight from Australia and New Zealand. These three countries form a kind of “golden triangle” for backpacker itineraires. The islands of Fiji (there are over 300, btw!) are splashes of paradise: shimmering white-sand beaches fringed with radiant palm trees and turquoise seas, and dramatic inland scenery of mountains, rainforests and waterfalls.

Beneath the tranquil surface of the sea water, you’ll find a dazzling kaleidoscope of life: dolphins, whales, sea turtles and dense coral reefs swarming with exotic fish. On the islands, world-class hiking trails crisscross through the forests and lookout points. What more could you want?

It’s quite a long flight from the US—and while we can’t make your flight any quicker, we’ve got plenty of flight deals to make it a bit cheaper. Keep scrolling for more info on the best time to book tickets, when to visit Fiji and more.

What are the main Fiji airport hubs?

The point of entry into Fiji for most international travelers is Nadi International Airport, which is located on the western edge of the main island, Viti Levu. Despite being the main airport, Nadi International is over 100 miles from the Fijian capital, Suva. Suva itself has an international airport by the name of Nissouri, but this is much less frequently used by international tourists. Still, you can’t complain too much: you’re in Fiji whatever way you look at it!

How to fly from the US to Fiji

If you’re ever looked at a world map, you might have noticed that Fiji is quite far from the US. As a result, there aren’t any direct flights, but US travelers can get there pretty easily by flying through Australia or New Zealand. In fact, you may just want to plan an extra-long stopover on the way and enjoy a few days in Sydney or Auckland to adjust to the time change (it’s a doozy!) and stretch your legs before carrying on. If you’d rather do it all in one go, you’ll have a layover on the way but can make it there in about 21-24 hours. United Airlines and Air New Zealand are two of the most popular airlines for flights to Fiji.

When is the best time to fly to Fiji?

Fiji, like many other island nations in the South Pacific, enjoys a tropical climate and warm weather all year long. Keep in mind Fiji’s two distinct seasons: wet season and dry season. Wet season runs from November to April and is more prone to (you guessed it) rain and the occasional monsoon or cyclone. Dry season is from May to October and is generally considered the best time to visit Fiji.

fiji universities and campuses

Fijian universities and campuses

Fiji has three universities: the University of the South Pacific, the University of Fiji and Fiji National University. The country isn’t generally seen as a top choice for a study abroad destination, but it’s certainly possible if your heart is set on it. It can be a particularly good choice if you’re studying something like marine biology, ecology or environmental studies, as you’ll have ready access to real-life projects in your field of study.

Fijian lifestyle and culture

Perhaps unsurprisingly, with its abundance of paradise beaches, turquoise ocean and incredibly agreeable climate, Fiji is a super laid-back place with a lifestyle to match. While you’re there, don’t expect things to run on a schedule like they do at home—instead, you’ll be on “Fiji Time.” Fiji time means buses will often run late, restaurants may be slower than you expect, and there’s a deep importance on family and community, even if it means things run behind schedule! Indigenous Fijian culture is very visible among the lifestyle of the locals, and it’s fused with influences from Chinese, Indian and European settlers.
