Sometimes you have to deal with a little pain to get someplace worth going to. Yeah, Australia is awesome, but if you live in the US it’s a bit of a haul. For those really long flights you need to be prepared.

Sometimes you have to deal with a little pain to get someplace worth going to. Yeah, Australia is awesome, but if you live in the US it’s a bit of a haul. For those really long flights you need to be prepared. With a little bit of planning and preparation you can make your trip a lot more comfortable – which means you’ll arrive more rested and ready for action. We’ve compiled some tips from other student travelers and added some of our favorites too. Here are five ways to stay comfy:

Wear comfortable clothes

This may be old news to a lot of travelers, but we still see a lot of people all dressed up on long flights. Why? Wear loose clothes and shoes that are easy to remove.

Get a noise-cancelling headset

No, it’s not a gimmick – a good noise cancelling headset will give you a lot more peace and quiet on that loud flight, making it easier to relax and enjoy music and movies.

Get the right seat

If there’s no additional charge, get an exit row seat and even if there is it might be well worth a few extra dollars. Regardless, make sure you get a seat that you like – either by pre-selecting it (online or with the airline) or showing up just a little bit earlier for check-in.

Bring a pillow

Either an inflatable one or a regular one. We don’t care if you think it looks stupid – if it makes it easier to sleep that’s what matters. Sleep is important to avoid possible jet-lag issues.

Refresh

What a difference some toothpaste can make. Buy a toothbrush and some toothpaste at the airport and put it in your carry-on. As you’re approaching your destination go to the washroom and splash some water in your face and brush your teeth. It’s not a vanity thing, it will wake you up and make you feel refreshed.

There are many more things you can do to make travel more comfortable, but these are some of our favorites. At the end of the day it’s all about experience – what makes you comfortable? Some people bring their own food, some read – but whatever you do make sure you prepare.

Happy travels!
